Why I Painted Sparrows with Shoeflowers

I remember red shoeflowers (hibiscus) from where I grew up, and also from my native village. In the village, as children, we would take the little green part of the flower and press its sticky end onto a fingernail—my whole hand with those fingernails looked cool, like the fingernails of a witch. Painting sparrows with shoeflowers blends those memories and evokes childhood memories.
